In July of 2003, Valerie Plame was outed as a covert CIA agent by columnist Robert Novak. During a Grand Jury investigation of the leak, New York Times reporter Judith Miller was called to testify about similar information she received and refused to reveal her source on the grounds of journalistic integrity. She was found in contempt of court and spent 85 days in jail. She was released when her source, revealed to be Scooter Libby, Vice President Cheney’s Chief of Staff, signed a waiver allowing her to testify on the matter.
